Newsletter, Term 4, 2025

We have completed the final term of art classes here at LimeDoor! The focus of fourth term, 2025, was to explore ideas put forward by the students. This was a term of individuality in the studio, an opportunity for students to develop and discuss their individual ideas, ask questions related to “making stuff”, “seek materials from studio supplies, and create their own artworks.

Over the course of the past ten weeks, we:

  • spent plenty of time potting: working with a range of clay bodies, we sculpted treasures, hand-built pots, trays, bowls, vases, candleholders and a little village using slab, coil and freestyle techniques. We also threw pots on the wheels. Yes, we got the hang of centreing clay! Awesome! Once fired, it was time to decorate our masterpieces with underglaze, clear and coloured glazes. The pieces look very professional! Great work, everyone!
  • used yarn to make pom-pon Christmas puddings, Wednesday Addams tassels, snowmen and extremely cute puppies.
  • constructed scenes in tall domes, according to themes dreamt up by students- featuring wobbling butterflies, ghosts, ladybugs, flying saucers, little people and other cool characters.
  • painted artworks on canvas, using various bodies of acrylic paints including flow and impasto.
  • constructed two styles of Scandinavian Christmas gnomes with machine and hand stitching, and glue.
  • practised creative skills, including origami folding of butterflies, hearts, frogs, gift boxes, boats, stars and flowers; we also had fun making never-ending cards; Pandora-style bracelets prompted discussion of the ways colours react to each other, matching, contrasting, pops of colour (and texture!) Some students made their own stamps and printed wrapping paper and other items. Others made polymer clay and shrinkie earrings, Perler bead key tags, coffee filter and paper towel roses.
  • sewed a “buddy” of their own design, adding features, clothing and props.
  • had plenty of fun choosing ‘inclusions’ for resin candle holders and other sculptures.
  • discovered the beauty of watercolour through painting a gorgeous, framed Winter scene.
  • used posca pens, gems and paint to make plant pots look fabulous- then we planted them!
  • constructed boxes and painted our designs on them, and then we made chocolate frogs to put inside them! (Not to mention making a tray of Rocky Road to share with family!)

Thankyou everyone, LimeDoor Studio has now ceased art classes for young artists as Catherine transitions to the next phase of her own creative endeavours. Thanks so much to students’ families, for your generous support of our art program! Thank you, students, for your wonderful ideas and dedication to learning. We wish you all an enjoyable, safe and restful term break and all the very best wishes for a great and creative future!
