Newsletter – Term 4, 2023

Happy Holiday Season to our talented art students and wonderful families! Thankyou for being a fabulous part of the LimeDoor Studio community during 2023!

Term 4 has been extremely busy- as usual! During “Expedition- collections of a would-be traveller”, students “travelled” to a range of worldly destinations, creating their own trove of fabulous souvenirs.

During the term, students worked enthusiastically and I know you will be amazed at the marvellous assortment of Expedition treasures your students have “collected!” They worked unstoppably! Their cache of creations is impressive!

  • Your young artists painted papers and constructed a travel journal (some people added goodies to their journal and others decided their journal was destined for other greatness!) They made twisted cords to bind those journals.
  • The steampunk music boxes looked awesome; wet and dry brushing was the technique practised here, as well as placement, balance and composition of decorative elements.
  • In Japan, we tried our hands at sumi-e, learning “The three Gentlemen” of sumi-e: bamboo, plum branches and blossom. Some people elected to make a fan with their sumi-e, and some made a kokodama game. We learned the Japanese art of Kumihimo, in making a jaunty cord bangle.
  • In New Zealand, we learnt about poi and made our own! We also explored the patterns and meanings of moko.
  • Travelling to Ancient Egypt, students created papier mache sarcophagi and wire armature, wrapped mummies. Some students made a cartouche of their name in hieroglyphics.
  • In Mexico, we delved into the art of Sugar skull creation, first, with hand embroidery on felt, and also a paper skull whose mouth opens and closes via a peg mechanism. We also wound beautiful Ojos de Dios in the traditional manner and also as a turtle using a similar technique.
  • We practised using a pattern and followed instructions to make a mixed media Indian elephant.
  • Over to South Africa, where we learnt to paint a watercolour sky, adding paper silhouettes to create a savannah sunset.
  • Another watercolour exercise, as we hopped over to Scandinavia, with the creation of a gorgeous snow scene.
  • We learnt about the Swedish good luck charm- the Dala Horse, and made one from air-drying clay, decorated with acrylic pens.
  • In England, we discovered gothic windows, colouring a foil and card Christmas tree decoration.
  • In Guatemala, worry dolls were on the agenda. We created these using the traditional method (although not the traditional, tiny size!)
  • Everyone loves shrinkies! In a quick visit to Russia, sets of handmade Matroushka shrinkies were turned into various pieces of jewellery.
  • France was our final destination. We “visited” a French patisserie, and “gathered” croissants, cupcakes, gateaux, eclairs, baguettes, and even sausage rolls,  hamburgers with the lot, hotdogs, egg and bacon on toast and doughnuts!  These lovely little miniatures were created from polymer clay, and acrylic paint. The beautifully decorated picnic tables looked gorgeous and the food looked absolutely delicious!

Thankyou so much for your wonderful support of our art program.  A friendly reminder that art classes begin again on Wednesday 31st of January, 2024, with plenty more great art projects!

We wish you all a safe, peaceful, fun, rejuvenating Holiday Season!

Kindest regards,

Catherine and the LimeDoor team
