Newsletter – Term 2, 2023

Dear Artists and Families,

Wow! It’s already the end of Term 2! Can you believe it?! Here’s a short recap of the projects your young people have undertaken this term…

With a focus on Art Theories (Colour, Elements and Principles), we:

  • Designed and made HAMA bead spinners
  • Marvelled at the effects of our own optical illusion CD spinners
  • Made and experimented with “3D” anaglyph spectacles
  • Wondered at the phenomenon of “persistence of vision” experienced with our handmade deco- and thauma-tropes!
  • Spent a couple of sessions, making a cute Bunny (soft sculpture in art terms!) from one pair of socks! We patiently hand-sewed and confidently machine stitched as well! Some people even had a go at learning to crochet and knit with a view to making a scarf for their rabbit.
  • Tried our hands- and brains- at making a 3D optical illusion “letter.” This involved plenty of patience and forward planning. It was not easy, and you would be proud of the perseverance and impressive results!
  • Had fun with a range of short art exercises including ‘blind contour drawing,’ the Japanese art of ‘Hirameki,’ drawing from memory, and 30 second drawings.
  • Created dazzlingly colourful artworks using cardboard, glue, string, foil and felt pens. Some even used the printing press with these!
  • Used three decorative techniques on Tote Bags: Paint scraping, Potato printing, and drawing with fabric paint pens.
  • Tie-dyed socks- they turned out great!
  • Made the ancient Sumerian game of Mancala from a simple egg carton and some thoughtful painting. We learnt how to make a ‘swirl’ cane with polymer clay and these became our playing pieces. This is a fun game that may be played with one, but is super fun with two players. It is great maths- and strategy- practise!
  • Created gorgeous artworks, both on canvas and paper, building “artist confidence,” as we followed an intuitive art process!
  • Also had tiny pockets of time to make a trihexaflexagon, some jewellery and a heap of shrinkies!

Thank you, everyone, for your enthusiasm and support of LimeDoor’s art program!

In case you’re interested, next term, Term 3, we will be experimenting with different types of paint as well as other materials, in the making of “homewares” to decorate our personal space.

We’ve also had plenty of interest in the idea of holding another Gallery Exhibition for the students. So, we will! In Term 3! More news on that later!

Have a happy and restful school holiday everyone!

Kindest regards,

Catherine and the LimeDoor team.
